This past week in Louisville has been a great one! I have been able to continue working with injured children in rehab and research. What is really interesting about this place is the research is embedded into the clinical rehab, which is very unique.
Working with the pediatric patients has been an amazing experience, and I can’t believe I only have one week left. The paralyzed children have a very unique and positive outlook on life, and it is very admirable and cool to watch.
Children who have suffered spinal cord injury (SCI) have certain advantages and disadvantages that adults do not have. For example, a big disadvantage is if a child who has suffered a spinal cord injury has never walked before their injury, they have nothing to remember about walking, and they do not have the muscle or mental memory of walking.
When I am not working with children, I have been analyzing data from a type of testing called FNPA. In these tests, children are covered in muscle sensors and the asked to preform basic movements such as a sit up; the sensors record which muscles are engaging and which are not. FNPA is performed on both disabled and non-disabled children. I have been comparing data from past and present FNPA’s on disabled children, to see and report the progress that the child has or has not made.
This weekend, I am planning on checking out Louisville some more, and going to a music festival called Forecastle Fest 2015. I have heard it is pretty cool.
