As week two started, I got to start becoming more involved in clinical rehab and research at the Kentucky Spinal Cord Research Center. I was able to complete a training course called CITI, so I can legally work with patients.
I have been working with paralyzed children ages 15 and under, and teaching them how to walk again. I have been assisting teams of physical therapists and doctors who help children reach their goals of moving their legs or injured areas again after becoming paralyzed.
I have been learning tons about paraplegia and rehab. Unfortunately, I am not allowed to tell you any specific information or facts concerning patients or their treatment, because the patients are protected under a government law called HIPPA. However, I can tell you that it is incredible to watch these therapists and doctors work, and do things that I did not think were possible. They are helping children walk who were told they would never walk again. It is very incredible to see, and I am looking forward to learning more!
I have been staying with the Patterson family, whom some of you might know; they lived in Telluride seven years ago. They have been super helpful in making this a more enjoyable experience! Louisville is cool; it is very hot. I have not had a lot of time out of work, but am looking forward to exploring on the weekends!
Thanks to all who have made this incredible experience possible! I am looking forward to more!
