This past week in Winchester, TN has been one to remember.
My mentor, Richard Austin, former director of the Propulsion Test and Evaluation Directorate at the Arnold Engineering Development Center, has been very informative. We started the week by visiting the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala. There I got to see aircraft such as the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird used during the Cold War that have been the stepping stones for today’s newest models. It was awesome to see this aircraft and to talk about its engines, whose design is still classified to this day, with Mr. Austin.
A second experience to remember was being able to go and fly a 1947 ERCO Ercoupe (pictured above) with local pilot Don Freeman. This was my favorite experience so far because it allowed me to see and feel one of the final products that aeronautical engineers worked toward.
I am looking forward to spending another week with the Austin family as I will remember this experience for the rest of my life.
