In Telluride competition for eyeballs was fierce on Thursday, June 4, what with that being the last day of school for most local kids. Still, a dedicated bunch turned up at the Wilkinson Public Library as we aired the third of our three Smithsonian Science How? live webcasts: “Unseen Connections: A Natural History of the Cell Phone.”
It turns out that the impact of cell phone production is truly global as this image depicting where in the world the “ingredients” are sourced shows. The supply chain is long, and the impacts profound, for what has become to many of us a largely disposable item we replace every few years.
We were thrilled that Smithsonian Anthropologist Joshua A. Bell answered our question live!
And we had a great time examining the innards of discarded cell phones after the webcast.
Many thanks to Smithsonian for inviting our participation!
