The past week in the lab Stephanie and I continued to dissect her invertebrates, dry and then grind her samples. Our samples each week consist of 10 styela, 10 mussels and 8 scallops (the scallops are harder to come by so we had to adjust to the total sample size and figure out how to make it last for the rest of the summer). We freeze half of the samples and then dissect the other half. Since we have to dry and grind 42 samples each week, we’ve come up with a system where she dissects them and then I grind the samples after they have been dried.
Also Bob and his partner Mark teach a summer class about beach ecology and they take a 4 day camping trip to the Channel Islands each summer with the class. This year they have invited Stephanie and I to tag along on the trip! We leave on Thursday so this next week we will have to prep a bit for the trip and learn some basic terms so we can keep up with the beach ecology lingo.
Last sunday I moved out of my old apartment and into a new one since the lease to the other one was up. I moved in with this young grad student named Nina. The past week has been incredible with her, she is so kind and has introduced me into her friend group of other grad students in her geology department. Nina and I went over to her friends house almost every night this week and would cook big dinners and watch movies. We also picked cumquats from the local trees a block from campus and candied the citrus fruits and stored them in mason jars. We plan to eat them with pie later this week 🙂
